Miller and his profound words will be in Panama City on Sunday at an event called “Real Talk: Empowering Mentors, Inspiring Youth.”

PANAMA CITY BEACH — A March 2017 video showing two New Jersey students fighting was posted on YouTube. The video went viral, but it wasn’t because of the fight — but because of Ibn Ali Miller, the man who broke up the fight with his words of encouragement.

Miller and his profound words will be in Panama City on Sunday at an event called “Real Talk: Empowering Mentors, Inspiring Youth.”

“We want mentors — who are engaged — to be motivated and empowered to continue,” said Janice Lucas of the LEAD Coalition of Bay County. “We want (youth) to receive the message they are loved and cared for, and there are different ways to handle disagreements.”

Hiba Rahim said the community is responsible for empowering the youth, and Miller will be there to offer inspiration to do so. She said Miller identifies with the youth because they share similar backgrounds.

Rahim, coordinator of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Florida (CAIR-Florida), said many people have faith in the youth, and they have the opportunity to create change.

“If you care about improving situations, you have to come to out to these events,” she said. “We have to let the younger generation know they are not bound by their socioeconomic predicaments.”

CAIR-Florida, LEAD Coalition of Bay County, JUDOS, ACURE and the Bay County Public Library are sponsoring the event, which will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 717 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
