CAIR-Florida Welcomes Four-year Prison

Sentence for Man Convicted for Threatening

to Bomb Islamic Center

(MIAMI, FL, 9/6/18) – The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the four-year prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release imposed on Dusting Hughes at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The convicted felon will be serving his sentence in federal prison after pleading guilty to bomb threat charges.

Hughes admitted to phoning multiple bomb threats back in May of this year to the Masjid Jamaat Ul-Mutaqeen Islamic Center in Pembroke Pines with the purpose of instilling fear into the Mosque’s members.
A statement from the president of the Masjid, Azeem Eoonus, was read in open court. Among other things it stated, “We will like to live our lives in peace and in harmony with society. The safety and security of our community and all other communities are sacred to us. We hope and pray that the accused will recognize and appreciate this. We also wish him well in the rehabilitation process.”

CAIR-Florida Communications Director, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, stated, “CAIR-Florida commends the swift and effective intervention of the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of Florida and federal law enforcement authorities in this most important matter involving the safety and security of the South Florida Muslim community.
“We welcome the four-year prison sentence plus three years supervised release sentences imposed on Dustin Hughes. We hope that these seven years will serve as a wake-up call and provide him time to consider the terrorizing effects his bomb threats had on the elderly, women and children. His sentence should also serve as a deterrent for this type of criminal activity that unfortunately is so frequently experienced by the Florida Muslim community.”
