(Orlando, FL, 7/31/17) The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Florida
(CAIR-Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, today published an open letter denouncing the Islamophobic live person poll against American-Muslim Orlando City
Council candidate Asima Azman.
Discrimination against a person for their religious beliefs is unconstitutional and violation of the 1st amendment. This hateful rhetoric puts Muslim Americans at risk and marginalizes a group of people.
We share this letter to oppose any forms of Islamophobic rhetoric and to express our concerns to the City of Orlando.
Open letter statement from CAIR-Florida Orlando Regional Director:

In the past weeks, voters in Orlando's District 3 received robocalls asking them how they felt about having a Muslim-American woman, Asima Azam, running for one of their city council positions.
The poll also asked if they were aware that she is a Muslim-American and inquired about their faith and beliefs.

So far, her opponent, City Commissioner Robert Stuart, has not confirmed whether or not he was involved with the live person call. In such a diverse and vibrant city like Orlando, there is no room for this kind of discrimination in our politics and our commissioners. Hateful rhetoric like this is what helps spread Islamophobia which is already too prevalent in the current administration.

We already see at a national level the anti-Islamic sentiment being expressed by our politicians and members of government that puts thousands of Muslim-American lives in harm's way and makes them a target for violence and bigotry.

More attacks than ever are being reported that target women in hijabs (head coverings) and discriminate against our Muslim brothers. The use of negative rhetoric, fear, and hatred to win elections and shape politics in Orlando will not be tolerated.

If Orlando has proven anything, it's that it embraces diversity with love and remains unfettered by those who try to arouse hate in the hearts of our citizens. We must continue our fight to reverse this trend and return Orlando to the kind of place where our elected officials reflect the diversity and values of their communities.
