Action Alert: CAIR-Florida Demands that Superintendent Willis Not Renew David Swinyar's Contract

(MIAMI, FL, 3/20/2018) - The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the State's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, demands that school Superintendent Patricia S. Willis not renew David Swinyar's teaching contract that is set to expire on June 30, 2018. Swinyar is a teacher at Kernan Middle School in Jacksonville, Florida.
Although CAIR-Florida commends school superintendent Dr. Patricia S. Willis for Swinyar's immediate 10-day suspension and reassignment to a non-teaching position, his removal as a teacher and the permanent termination of his contract should be the next step.

Swinyar's clear, outspoken racist conviction has spread and, if allowed to continue, will expand and advance the course of racial discrimination against all African-American communities. In addition, his conduct clearly violates Florida's Principles of Professional Conduct for Education and Florida federal law.

"Students are naturally influenced by their teachers and school leadership. Swinyar's dangerous stance against African-American communities spreads hate that can embolden his students and colleagues to adopt and even act upon his bigoted views. In addition to furthering racial discrimination, this makes our children and our schools less safe. In particular, with the legislation that was recently passed, SB 7026, which allows the arming of some school teachers and personnel, parents of color are afraid to send their children to school if this program is adopted. Their children already face disproportionate levels of reprimanding actions and there is a real and present fear that their children could become targets," said Rasha Mubarak, CAIR-Florida's Central Florida Regional Director.

Classrooms grant public servants a platform that should be upheld with moral responsibility that encourages intersectionality and supports diversity. Swinyar's behavior makes students, faculty, and staff less safe and furthers racial discrimination in classrooms. His behavior may even trigger others to react violently toward black and African-American students, individuals, groups, and other marginalized communities.
