(Miami, Fla., 12/14/18) – On Friday, December 14, 2018, the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic-Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, announced the successful completion of a fundraiser to reconstruct Bay County Islamic Society's Islamic Center and School devastated by Hurricane Michael.
On October 11th, Hurricane Michael slammed ashore at northeast Florida as a Category 4, the strongest ever to hit the Florida Panhandle, causing immense damages to the Islamic Center - practically destroying it - and seriously affecting the adjacent Islamic school.
CAIR-Florida representatives and other CAIR-Florida allies helped mobilize the Florida community members to support the Launch Good campaign: Hurricane Michael Disaster Relief: Rebuild Panama City Masjid & School. The campaign was promptly set up by CAIR-Florida’s Executive Director, Hassan Shibly, and soon met and exceeded the initial $50,000 goal to realize a grand total of $106,900. CAIR-Florida’s Communications Director, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, in coordination with ICNA Relief’s Chief Operations Officer, Abdul Rauf Khan, was able to be on the ground a few days after Hurricane Michael leveled Panama City and Mexico Beach.
The spiritual leader for the Bay County Muslim community, Imam Amr Dabour, stated, "We thank CAIR-Florida's effort in organizing this fundraiser. This was an example of a community coming together to collaborate. In the past we were able to assist others, now others are assisting us. A humbling experience. On behalf of the Bay County Islamic Society, Thank You! ... May Allah reward you in full."
