(TAMPA, FL – 3/27/2019) -- The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today asked the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners and Pastor Roger Diaz of the Orlando Fellowship Church to cancel events featuring anti-Muslim group ACT for America Director Brigitte Gabriel.

CAIR-FL said the events are scheduled for March 27th at the Fellowship Church and on March 28th at the Brevard County Government Complex.

ACT for America founder and President Brigitte Gabriel believes that “America is at stage two Islamic Cancer.” She also argues that “every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim,” that a Muslim “cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States,” and that Arabs “have no soul.” The Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a U.S. veterans group, refers to Gabriel as “pathologically bigoted."

CAIR-Florida sent letters earlier today to the Brevard County Commissioners and to Rev. Roger Diaz, who is the Pastor for the Fellowship Church in Orlando, asking them to: 1) disassociate from ACT for America in the same way they would from any other hate group (KKK or neo-Nazi), 2) familiarize the Board of County Commissioners  with ACT for America’s status as an anti-Muslim hate group, 3) drop ACT for America’s events from the Fellowship Church and Brevard County Government Complex, and 4) refuse to attend such bigoted events with ACT for America’s director or staff.

CAIR-Florida’s Communications Director, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, stated:

“We hope Brevard County, the Fellowship Church and all Floridians become better aware of ACT for America’s national role in spreading anti-Muslim hate. Events promoting anti-Muslim bigotry, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, and any other form of hate have no place in Florida.

“Our communities have been direct targets of such hate crimes as mosque arsons, bomb threats, assaults and battery, and bullying; in many instances inspired by the xenophobic rhetoric permeating the current social and political environment. Undoubtedly, these types of xenophobic events hosted by ACT’s Brigitte Gabriel leave behind a poisonous atmosphere.”

CAIR-Florida is the State’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR-Florida es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
