(MIAMI, FL, 7/29/19) – The Florida Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida), the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned a drive-by shooting attack at a North Miami Beach Synagogue on Sunday evening that resulted in a man being shot multiple times. CAIR-Florida is asking federal law enforcement agencies to investigate this violent incident as a hate crime.

Local and national media outlets are reporting that, on the evening of Sunday, July 28th:
1. Synagogue drive-by shooting being investigated as possible hate crime, say police
2. Man shot outside synagogue near North Miami Beach

In a recent statement, CAIR-Florida Communications Director, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, said, "It is troubling that Florida continues to witness criminal attacks on its places of worship, this time another synagogue. We have stated before that an attack on a synagogue is an attack on every mosque, church, temple, and place of peace and worship in this country. We offer our prayers and support to the drive-by shooting victim and to our Jewish brothers and sisters who worship at the Young Israel of Greater Miami Synagogue. We are asking federal law enforcement officials to investigate this incident as a potential hate crime. We must put a stop now to this type of aggression against the core of our religious freedom liberties.”

CAIR-Florida is urging all houses of worship and faith-based and advocacy organizations to take extra security precautions as outlined in its "Best Practices for Mosque and Community Safety" booklet. The advice in this publication is applicable to all institutions, regardless of the organizational mission.
