(Tampa, FL, 6/17/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed passage of legislation marking Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Later today, President Biden will sign the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 — when enslaved people in Texas were told of the Emancipation Proclamation.

“We welcome passage of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act and await President Biden’s signature on this important legislation,” said CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “However, legislative efforts to celebrate historic progress against racism cannot take the place of legislation that would combat racism today, such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”
[NOTE: “Juneteenth,” or “Freedom Day,” commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas; the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States. That announcement came two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation of Jan. 1, 1863, which ended slavery in the United States. The 1863 proclamation was ignored by Confederate states, and it was not until the end of the war in 1865 that the order was enforced in the South.]
CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
