(MIAMI, FL, 8/30/2016) - The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Florida) today applauded the School Board of Broward County's Resolution in Support of American Muslim Heritage Month: May 2017.
The resolution, approved by the school board on August 16, recognized that it is, ". . .appropriate to acknowledge and promote awareness of the myriad of invaluable contributions of American Muslims in Broward and across the country, and extend to them respect and camaraderie every American deserves."
This is the first time a Florida county school board has approved this type of resolution and it sets a precedence for other counties here and in other states.
"The American Muslim community is pleased with the passing of this resolution, which recognizes American Muslim contributions while also calling the attention to the challenges that our community members, including our women and children, have faced and continue to face," said Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, Communications Director for CAIR-Florida.
The resolution highlighted that American Muslims within Broward county, "...have...been forced to endure harassment, assault and discrimination since the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. During the year 2015 alone, there were approximately 174 reported incidents of anti-Muslim violence and vandalism in the United States."
CAIR-Florida has seen a five-fold increase in reports of hate incidents during 2015 compared with 2014. This Florida civil rights organization continues to receive a disturbing number of reports on hate incidents and hate crimes each month.

"La misión de CAIR-Florida es mejorar la comprensión del Islam, fomentar el diálogo, proteger las libertades civiles, capacitar a los musulmanes estadounidenses, y construir coaliciones que promuevan la justicia y la comprensión mutua".
CAIR-Florida is the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties of all people, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
