(Miami, FL, 11/21/2016) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations - Florida (CAIR-Florida), the state's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization, is celebrating a record attendance of over 500 that included South Florida Muslim community members and dozens of interfaith partners from Christian, Jewish, and other faith communities. The successful fund-raising banquet totaled an amount close to $570,000. When added to the over $330,000 raised last month at the Orlando Banquet, the total amounts to a robust $900,000 contributed to date.

CAIR-Florida's Chief Executive Director, Hassan Shibly, welcomed the strong response from the South Florida Muslim community. "The community's support for CAIR-Florida was overwhelming at our sold-out annual banquet in South Florida last Saturday where more than 500 guests donated close to $570,000. Despite the tense political climate in the aftermath of the elections, our donors are solidly backing our 20-strong team's commitment to protect their civil rights. Because they trust us, they gave us the means to keep providing the tools to ensure their safety, to be informed, and to embolden them to have their voices heard at all levels," said Shibly.

The banquet's program featured recognized scholars on Islam as well as national celebrities and entertainers. Among the prestigious guests this year were Dr. John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, Said Durrah, an American stand-up comedian of Arab descent, and American Muslim Scholar, Imam Sirah Wahhaj.

Awards were given to Divine Connect, Nancy G. Abudu of ACLU, and Attorney Flynn P. Bertisch for their services to the community.

The event was emceed by CAIR-San Francisco Bay Area's Executive Director, Zahra Billoo, Esquire.
