(Miami, FL – 3/14/2017) CAIR-Florida, the state’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called for state and federal hate crime charges to be brought against Richard Lloyd of Florida who attempted to set fire to a convenience store. Lloyd reportedly told investigators that he assumed the owner of the store was Muslim and it made him mad; he said it was “…due to what they are doing in the Middle East”. CAIR-Florida is calling on the State Attorney and the U.S. Attorney to bring hate crime charges against the perpetrator.

“This man needs to face the consequences of his actions.  Lloyd targeted innocent people after mistakenly assuming they were Muslims. Lloyd confessed to law enforcement officials about his evil, xenophobic motive. The State and U.S. Attorneys need to protect not only the targeted Muslim community but also other minority ethnic and religious communities in Florida and nationally that are suffering from this unfortunate growing trend of hate crimes,” said CAIR-Florida’s Communications Director, Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, Esq.

Local, National and International news outlets have reported the arsonist’s arrest:
