The armed fugitive shot and killed by law enforcement outside a Fort Lauderdale mosque on Friday was wanted for a knife attack in Osceola County.

Police officers and U.S. Marshals had been looking for Hamid Ould-Rouis, who was accused of beating up a man and stabbing a woman nearly to death in Kissimmee early Thursday. The woman remains hospitalized in critical condition, Osceola deputies said.

After the attack, a judge issued an arrest warrant for attempted murder for Ould-Rouis, 58.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tracked him to the parking lot near the Masjid Al-Iman mosque, at 2542 Franklin Dr. When he got out of a black SUV with a weapon, several officers opened fire. He died on the scene.

“In response to a threat posed by the subject, members of the task force fired their weapons, striking the subject,” according to a statement by the U.S. Marshals.

Authorities do not believe the fugitive had any connection to the mosque.

Wilfredo Ruiz, a spokesman for the Florida chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, said he has been in contact with community members at the mosque and they said the suspect is not involved with the community.

The road to the mosque has been closed and Ruiz said it may affect the congregants’ afternoon service. He said the mosque has more than 100 members.
